At Thu, 10 Aug 2000 it looks like Greg Retkowski composed:

GR-->It is also a good idea to have a windows box available for them to
GR-->configure and test when they do an install.

What I did was first (test) and lay all my cat-5 throughout
the house, made a place to mount the DSL modem at the first possible
input of the phone line to the house which was also near a 110v
outlet so a little planning is needed to make the technicians stay
as breif as possible. The tray I chose to mount the 'Alcatel 1000'
was one that also allowed full air-flow through the base.
When the technician arrived he had a laptop and I asked him
to 'forget' about setting up my box, just prove that he can get out
of the house with his laptop.
He plugged in, gave me my static IP values on paper, went to
http://speedtest.mybc.com , clocked a download, showed me the
results and left.
This must have been more than a year ago for the PPPoE was
not a threat back then, it happened not too long afterwards. I live
in the Richmond District of San Francisco and the PacBell DSL has
only gone done once and that may have been an issue with the
electricity or something here for all I had to do was follow the
online help and turn off the Alcatel modem, wait a minute or two and
restart it.
