Any time the issue of certification comes up on a mailing list, it
seems that everyone says "Certification sucks, my former employer
hired someone who was certified in [ name of program ] and he was
an idiot."
But some people like to see a certificate on your wall, and if it
will get you a consulting contract, or a job, or a raise, then
why not do it? Just do your research so you have a reasonable
expectation that certification will help you.
There's an organization called the Linux Professional Institute that
plans to give Linux certification exams: http://www.lpi.org/
Caldera is starting to offer courses to train you for LPI exams:

And Red Hat has its own certification program

I think you have to go to a testing center for the certification
programs, but you can take a Linux class on the web that gives
you Continuing Education Units:
