We certainly don't want to force anyone to install Red Hat Linux - it
should be your choice which OS you install and use...even if
you choose a non-Linux OS!

Most Linux users know that if it runs of Red Hat Linux, it can quite
probably be installed and run on any 2.0.x kernel/glibc Linux system.
(You may need to have rpm available...but that is far from limited to
Red Hat Linux - or even Linux).

What you are seeing here is a side effect of Red Hat's success - most
ISVs look at the Linux market and see Red Hat Linux as the largest and
ostensibly the most successful Linux distribution (particularly in the
corporate space).

So - as there is no Linux standard as yet, they choose to go with the
market leader (you can hardly blame them for that). In many cases,
these organisations never even speak to us - the first thing we know is
the announcement (though that was not the case this time).

Please note: we remain committed to the Linux standards process and are
not trying to become a de facto standard (as some extremely poorly
researched and written press articles have suggested).

Finally, if an ISVs package *does* only install and run on a Red Hat
Linux box, then please do NOT blame Red Hat for this. We are not
responsible for building the packages that ISVs sell. If you want to
run it on another distribution and have problems, get in touch with the
ISV concerned. They need to know that they have a problem (and you may
well be able to help them fix it).
