[svlug] 2.2.3 Problem

Thank you Rob for an interesting run through ppp functions and how
it actually works. As you say it isn't pretty but it works. 10.0.0.2 is
the address I give to my ethernet card in a local net.

I am an engineer and what drives me is that we replace one item in
the system, albeit the most sensitive item (the kernel) in an overall
system that includes the modem computer, setup the whole 9 yards. Every
thing works just fine except certain items. There are changes in the
kernel that cause certain items not to work. This is obvious because they
ALL work using the old kernel.

People who write the item don't like to be told the item has a
problem. But simple tests like this prove there are problems. But what are
they? They say "you need a later version of this". You get the later
version and it helps.

Then there are conflicts. One system changes the item and has no
problems at all. Another system will not even boot. In between these
extremes is what most people face. I am not happy when I am having a
problem and another guy says "I have no problem, works fine".

In this case the other guy is exactly right, he has no problem
because he doesn't use what I do in my system. At this moment 2 components
of my system do not function with the new item.

The item (kernel) can be mis-configured. I do not think mine is. I
have configured a lot of kernels over the last 5 years.

Rob your explanation leads me to believe a part of the system that
I do not have at home is perhaps the problem, the ISP. But it works almost
perfect with the old kernel and not at all with the new. Watching the
lights on the modem (it's external) indicate the ISP is called and a
connection is made. But watching rd and sd there is no data exchange. It
is as if the ISP can not talk to my system. Perhaps the ISP data is sent
to the wrong place.

But I try 9 times to talk to the ISP. So it's possible my
computers data never gets to the ISP and it quits. I am going to play with
the permissions on /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS0 which are both used in the
ppp exchange. Also another user had my problem exactly and solved it by
making a pppuser group.

In my opinion changing the kernel such that new user groups need
to be formed and the modem configuration button in Red Hat latest load can
never be used again is dirty pool. And not necessary, in my opinion.

To you Rob, thanks for all you have done. It's already printed
along with the message telling me how to make a ppp debug file. This is
interesting and a great mystery. I expect the outcome to be a simple
change...:-)
