Caught the following thread from another list:
Here in our Dept at Soton we have two platforms for undergraduate
students to use - Linux Redhat 5.2 or Windows NT 4. We keep detailed
stats of all PC use (the sort of thing assessors like to see), and our
webmaster knocked up an interesting live "pie page" in which we should
what proportion of each are (as far as we can tell) in use.
The URL is: http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ug/
Of our machines being monitored, about 45 are NT and 35 Linux. I don't
believe specific coursework requirements are skewing the figures too
much.
Linux generally leads.
Has anyone else got any similar monitoring going on?
Cheers,

We don't monitor that closely, but we do odd snap shots. results vary
dependant on module deadlines! We have 129 indentical PCs with 67 with
Linux and 52 with NT. To be honest they all get used pretty heavily.
One thing thats gets hidden are the large number of students sat in
university PC labs remote logged in to the Linux boxes to do courses,
use
mail etc. That despite us running a general purpose compute server
explicitly for remote logins etc (340 processes, 65 different users
logged
in, PII/266, 256M ram, load < 1, hardly any swapping - eat your heart
out
NT :-)
The students seem to like the KDE environment we offer as the default.
And it all runs smoothly (except for the NT of course). We tend to
notice
that on average the "bright" kids go for the Linux boxes.
cheers
