hello all,
I'm having some trouble with getting pppd setup and I one some of you can help.
If I use minicom, all works fine. (modem initializes, I dial, modem connects, I
quit-without-reset from minicom and start pppd, all works fine ...)
If I try to use the scripts, nothing happens. these are the scripts
cut-and-pasted from the pppd howto, I can post them if it would help, but
theres really nothing in them other than start pppd and pass it a chat dialog.
looking in the syslog, this much seems to work, (pppd starts up and starts
chat) chat then sends the modem an init string (the same one as minicom, thanks
again to cut-and-paste) and waits for the modem to respond with 'OK'.
the modem never responds (either with 'OK' or with the blinking leds) and it
eventually times out. it really looks like the init string never reaches the
modem. I've tried different initstrings, but it didn't make a difference, so I
setteled on the one minicom uses. I tripple checked that both were using the
same device (/dev/ttyS1), and I double checked the man page for pppd to make
sure it was getting all the required options in the correct order (pppd
/dev/ttyS1 38400 connect $DIALER_SCRIPT). I must be overlooking something
obvious, as all the pieces work individually. The modem is a Zoom
External-with-blinking-LED's and the box is an intel P90 running suse 5.2 .
Thanks.
