Pah. This is easily solved by the search engine letting you "save" your
default locality in a cookie. Let the user define what "local" means - is it
the entire bay area or just Sunnyvale? Could do a Radius in Miles / KM
I suppose.
When you search, just click the check box for "local only".
To really do this right, we need to go through the HTML standards committee
and add another "official" meta tag for physical location and scope /
region of
service. The standard would have to support local only (Biff's Pizza Pie
Shoppe)
as well as international multi-location companies (Pizza Hut).
This isn't perfect either (top of the head idea) but at least it lets us use
automated directories / search engines. This way I don't have to search
in Dominos.com, pizzahut.com, roundtable.com, mountainmikes.com etc. I just
search for Pizza, Local.
This would probably be the easiest to maintain and implement compared to
mucking with DNS and would work withing the current technical environment.
