Yes, it's well known that problems will arise with egcs. Unfortunately,
the latest README that comes with the kernel doesn't mention this.
It's also unfortunate that most distributions are starting to include egcs
as the default GCC and even the egcs release notes state that "It is
highly recommended on Linux as the default C/C++ compiler system."
The latest stable GCC (2.7.2.3) should be used instead.

"egcs is an experimental step in the development of GCC, the GNU C
compiler."
Anything labled "experimental" probably shouldn't be used to build a
stable production kernel.
