[svlug] WinTV and video cards

Hello:
I bought a WinTV card from Hauppage company.  I'm thinking of
buying a new video card that will work with linux X11 windows.
My old cirrus chipset card apparently doesn't support direct draw,
whatever that is.  WinTV suggests S3 cards, ATI Mach64, Diamond
Stealth and Matrox Millenium as well as ET6000 Hercules among
others.  Does anyone use these cards under linux?  Which is the
best one?

I wonder if I will need a better monitor with these
advanced VGA cards... It says it requires more than 256 colors
in 640x480 mode.  Oh well...

I'm thinking of writing a device driver for this TV thing.
I wonder if I could do directdraw under X11 somehow...
