Quoting Jonathan Jefferies (jonathanj at allant.com):
[stuff about serial ports]
People who have fully used their existing serial ports are rare,
but do exist. That's why I used to find it handy to know about (e.g.)
Everex's multi-I/O cards.

Cheaper <> cost-effective.
Concluding the latter in this instance, would require, in my view, a
rather purblind understanding of what constitutes "effectiveness".
> Though I, ALSO, appreciate leds.
You might possibly be among the many who have wilfully misread what I've
said on that subject: My point about LEDs solely concerned the diagnosis
of modems that do _not_ respond to poking with (e.g.) minicom.
> External modems have the drawback that they make great boat anchors

The above appears to assume that they are less upgradeable than internals.
In fact, the opposite is often the case -- certainly so with U.S.
Robotics Couriers.
> Still if there were a decent alternative in terms of cost for obtaining
> an external modem I would be definitely be interested.
Good luck. My sole reason for commenting initially was that your post
seemed to indicate a misapprehension that internals were your only option.
I never volunteered to do your market research for you.
