[svlug] /var/log messages

I've been getting some errors during boot which
scroll by to quickly for me to examine them.
Aren't the boot messages - errors and all - copied
to some log file?  I remember this being so on my
old slackware system.  But I've not had any luck
finding them on this Debian 2.0 system that I'm
currently running.  

Any suggestions as to where I might find a copy of
the boot messages?
