[svlug] Terminal Logins

    The plot thickens!

I created a non-password account on this non-netted machine, have
logged in, but I can neither use, nor set, the password. Passwd says it
is not the same, no matter how many times I type the identical keys. All
other commands, heavy output, etc. seem to work ok.

Well, it is set to data leads only. If I enable modem control, it
won't do anything. With data leads only, it will talk ok. Terminal is 8
data bits, no parity, 1 stop.

Adjusted for 9600, I have tried this, and it works, sort of. I get a
nice login prompt, can type an account name, and it WILL finally wait till
I finish typing the password. It then waits a little while, and tells me
that I have typed the password wrong, and rejects me.

The console log just says repeated login failures.

i think it is reasonably clear that the problem involves the password
handling chain. After all, even if parity, etc. was wrong, it would be
the same, allowing me to set the password, even if it could not be
replicated from the systems console.
