Hey Guys. Been kicking around some ideas concerning student chapters of
SVLUG. Wanted to present them to the list for comments/flames/further
suggestions.
First off, I think that student chapters of SVLUG should be invited
into normal SVLUG meetings/events. Resistance is futile. You will be
assimilated into the collective :) I think that if possible, we should
provide a bit of webspace for each chapter, listing members and their
current projects/accomplishments. Ian, please let me know if this is
feasable.
Secondly, I think that Nick's Hack-Pit idea is great. Check out his
paper at www.zork.net on the subject. Getting students together to write
GPL'ed software will give them some real-world experience that college
classes don't seem to offer. Nick, if you are reading this, please
contact me off list, so that we can arrange something, perhaps after the
semester break.
I also know that not all students who are obsessed with linux would want
to code. Perhaps we could provide in-roads to sysadmin training? I'm going
to get in touch with Caldera and Red Hat concerning their training
programs.
A question for the group...how do we decide how a student chapter is
formed? Is their any guidelines for this? Comments would be much
appreciated.
Your ideas and feedback would be much appreciated.
