Je comprend.  Je parle un petit peux de francais.

I think it's one of those cases where the ancestors changed the
spelling along the way.  "Augustin" or "Augustine" derives from the
Latin and thus shows up in all the romance languages (French, German,
Spanish, etc.) in various forms.  En Francais we always pronounced it
like "matin".
