FYI - the MIPS benchmark is almost as bogus as using clock speed as an
indicator of performance. In the end, the only benchmarks that matter is
how fast your application runs on a system. If you are looking for raw CPU
performance, the DEC Alpha 21264 at 600MHz is your best bet. It currently
rates at 45 SPECint95 and 60 SPECfp95. The PII at 450MHz, on the other hand,
only scores 17 on the SPECint95, and 12.9 on the SPECfp95.
Motorola's AltiVec technology, when it ships next year, might give every
processor on the market, a run for it's money.
