Actually, IDG has published _Linux for Dummies_.

One of the authors is Jon "maddog" Hall. It seems that his desire to write
in this series surprised a lot of people, but I've heard that his contribution
is pretty worthwhile.
I have never been an enthusiast of the idea of a series calling itself "for
dummies". Sure, other books have emphasized in their titles that they'd
attempt to provide a gentle introduction to something for beginners: _Slide
Rule Simplified_, _The Royal Road to Card Magic_... but they don't so routinely
demean the arts they document and their devotees.
_DOS for Dummies_, perhaps the first and only _Dummies_ book I read, had a
strongly anti-geek, anti-technology, and occasionally vaguely anti-intellectual
slant to it. My experience of it (quite a while ago) was that, instead of
inspiring the reader with a vision of what he could hope to learn in the
future, it discouraged him from learning detail and made fun of those who did.
As a geek, I did not get a positive feeling from it.

said, "Nay, but we will have a king over us, that we also may be like all the
nations." (1 Sam 8) http://ishmael.geecs.org/~sigma/ http://www.loyalty.org/
