Probably a cable problem, but it has happened to me that a chip
starts overheating, and eventually blows. Same symptoms, drive hangs
intermittently, requiring a power cycle on the drive. Check cooling for
the PC board side of the drive, and feel the chips for a really hot one.
(Many are hot, the bad one will be very painfully hot.) The unit that
failed on my system was a Conner 2 gig drive.
Could be other things, too.
