No, Rick. He just confused svlug at svlug.org with
rick at hugin.imat.com you see. I don't know if you've been told, but
this list is here to serve one and only one purpose: to ask Rick Moen
questions. As a matter of fact, I think we should all preface any
future questions with "Rick Moen, ". This will remove any confusion,
and will keep people like Seth David Schoen or Don Marti or Ian Kluft
from answering any questions.
So an innocent question seeking public opinion is never just
that. For example, when I once asked for opinions on tried-and-true
hardware, I got a lot of people heartily advocating the BT-958 and
related SCSI cards. Now, I didn't take the collective endorsement of
these cards seriously until I read an endorsement from Rick Moen.
Now, the best ethernet card for Linux seems to be the NetGear
with the authentic tulip chipset. The best and most reliable SCSI
cards seem to be the Mylex BT-948 and BT-958 cards. The best video
cards used to be the Matrox Millenium II, but those are no longer
available (It's difficult to find the aforementioned Netgears, but I
did find a pile in San Bruno once). I haven't seen any cards come to
claim the Matrox throne, but I'm sure that there is a wealth of
anecdotal evidence to suggest an heir.
This evidence can likely be found by searching through the
archives of the SVLUG mailing list on the web, and seeing what
problems people have had, what successes, and what disappointed
successes. If there are no recent discussions on video chipsets
(unlikely), the best course of action is to ask for opinions on the
list.
As Rick points out, there will be few people with the
experience to point out which is the best of ALL video cards.
However, since the experience on this list is far wider than it is
deep, you may be able to find a few elated folks who will be able to
suggest avenues to explore further.
...or you could just ask Rick Moen.
