I've seen that exact problem, with Virge DX.  My workaround:

    login as root, then do:
    which xdm >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local

I.e., if X doesn't have to terminate, then the console typeface never
gets messed up.

I doubt that the problem is 5.2-specific.

Do I correctly gather that you assume somebody here has carefully
studied substantively all of the plausible choices, and that _only_ 
such paragons will express their views?
