OK, I've sent a note to the SVLUG officers for discussion about this.

As far as I can tell, this idea is getting enthusiastic support. There
are several people who expressed interest in participating from the
SVLUG side.

Some options under discussion are a mail list for Linux in local schools,
designated "SVLUG student chapters" for school computer clubs that want
to affiliate with SVLUG, and a volunteer group within SVLUG intended to
help teachers/schools interested in Linux and/or promote use of Linux
in schools. Bear in mind that we'll only do what we have volunteers
for so not necessarily all of those items may be feasible at once from
the beginning. The volunteers will pick what they'll do.

So far, it looks like the SVLUG student chapters idea would apply to
high schools, junior colleges and universities in the Bay Area.
