[svlug] scsi problem

Anyone know of a reason why an HP SureStore 2000 LP (aka C3725S) hard disk
might have trouble connecting to an Adaptec 1520A?
The Adaptec seems to be unable to detect that the drive has spun up. Liux
shows the problem during the boot sequence, and the Adaptec's built-in tests
also show the problem. Online tech info at HP and Adaptec doesn't help, nor
do the manuals. I'm trying to figure out if I've got a configuration
problem, a hardware mismatch, or just a bad drive (the Adaptec works okay
with a scsi CD-ROM, so I assume it is okay generally).
This is on a 486 system running Slackware 3.2, with 2 IDE drives already
present, if that matters.
