When traffic reaches a critical level, one needs to segment the local
area network so as to reduce traffic that crosses segments. This is why
patch plug boards are so common in some areas, and why they use subnet
masks, etc. I've had a lot of message traffic problems on some consulting
assignments. Whenever that happens, they re-assign the portion of the
network I am using, juggling plugs to balance the load.
