In /usr/X11/bin/ is a symlink "X" to XF86_S3.  Change that to
point to XF86_VGA (you'll need the xfree86 vga package if you don't have it).
When you're done, point it back.  X will hopefully be good about figuring
out which modes in your XF86Config will work in vga.
There's probably also an arg you can pass to xinit or startx to run
XF86_VGA instead of "X", but I don't know that one.  Try 'man xinit'.
