I've been running 2.1.x for the better part of the last year and have
never encountered that. I usually don't reboot except for when the
new kernels come out.
My system configuration:
* i430TX chipset motherboard, AMD-K6-233 processor, 128MB RAM.
* NCR 53c876 SCSI controller with disks, cd, tape.
* No IDE disks (you said something about this?).
* Sorta-cheapo Diamond Stealth something video board.
* AWE32 audio board.
* 3Com 3c590 ethernet.
I do happen to have APM compiled in, cause I wanted to play with it.
That or the IDE thing you mentioned are likely causes. What you say about
"little is going on with the system" might mean an APM problem.
