I just had 2.1.128 go into the same mode. This never happened with
2.1.125. Just out of curiosity, did you comment out the Makefile SMP=1? I
forgot to do this on one build and it never seemed to slow down. It seems
like it is only with UP kernels, kernels compiled as SMP but running on
only one CPU appear so far not to have the problem.
