Hello,
I'm currently taking the courses offered at San Francisco City College
and it started with "Intro to Unix," using HP-Unix with the Korn Shell
that is the standard
there.
Upon finishing the course with an A,(I felt I deserved a B actually) I
proceeded to the next level. "Unix System Admin." is the next in line but
I had a schedule conflict and went for the TCP/IP class. (enter the brick
wall called shell scripting.)
Not having the Sys Admin. class under my belt I proceeded to sign up for
TCP/IP for it sounded like such an _easy_ class. (insert welding hood in
mouth) The class almost always uses or refers to scripts in one form or
another.
Shell Scripting seems to almost demand a semester all alone. I asked the
teacher about the idea this semester and he would lean more towards that
idea than not.
The great thing about the TCP/IP class is the 8 Linux Red Hat machines
that we have as a subnet in the lab to play with. Richard Courture<ispell)
from the Coffeenet set up the network there.
The gap between "Intro to Unix" to "Unix Sys Admin." is where I think a
Shell Programming class should be offered. The problem is that there is
not enough Unix teachers in the College. :(
Another interesting point that came up was brought to light by Don Marti
who gave me some help on a script. He noted that PERL is where to start
heading and when I mentioned that to the teacher he pointed out that if
something breaks or gets the big _rm_ one needs to recreate the original
script, which I then realized was a valid point.
Luckily I'm taking the TCP/IP class for the fun of it, not the grade for
it's a very demanding class. I may just take it again.
Eighteen 3 hour classes for $50. Can't beat that. Thank goodness I have
no Linux/Unix ego for the class just humbled me completely.
