Hold up. KDE and GNOME are reasonably good GUI's. They don't
look/act like M$ anything. M$ badly attempts to look like them and their
predecessors. *Badly*.
But GNOME is the long-term perspective, whereas KDE is short-term.
GNOME is better in the long run, aesthetically, technologically,
architecturally, and GUI-lly. :) But it's not done yet.
Also, GNOME is "FREE" (with a capital 'F') and KDE is "free" (with
a small 'f').
GNOME is free speech; KDE is a free lunch.
This is due largely to the UI library that sits between Xlib (X11
protocol) and the user interface. KDE uses 'qt' and GNOME uses GTK+.
See their respective licenses (free speech) and their respective
architectural programming differences (free lunch).
