Quoting whisper (whisper at unix.cde.com):

> Chipset: DTCT-436
> 9624
> AG0328.1
> 900033-0

I parse that as being a DTC (Data Technology Corporation, a division
of Qume) chipset, presumably model 436 (or 9624?).

It's beginning to look as if that's an unsupported SCSI chipset.
The 2.0.34 kernel sources have drivers for DTC models 3280 and 3180.
Then there's the DTC 406, which the kernel docs say is compatible
with the NCR model 53C400, and therefore is supportable using the
latter chipset's Linux driver.

Elsewhere, I also found mention of DTC's 329x (EISA) chipset, which
is compatible with the driver for Adaptec 154x chipsets.

Elsewhere still...

DTC 3181E: not supported
"Non-Adaptec compatible, non-NCR53c8xx DTC boards [...] will never work.
Acquiring programming information requires a non-disclosure agreement
with DTC. This means that it would be impossible to distribute a Linux
driver if one were written, since complying with the NDA would mean
distributing no source, in violation of the GPL, and complying with the
GPL would mean distributing source, in violation of the NDA."

So, I regard that as pretty definitive. You can still have Linux
talk to your scanner, of course, but you're going to have to
substitute a more standard SCSI host adapter, first. You might
consider one of the inexpensive NCR (aka Symbios) cards, for
example.

Cheers, Linux: It is now safe to turn on your computer.
