Don't know if this will help (stuff you probably already know) but I
have a guy in London who sometimes needs to access one of my systems
for maintainence.  We do this via a PPP connection - I connect,
check ifconfig for the assigned IP address and provide it to him via
voice or email.  He connects to his ISP and does "telnet [IP
adddress]" - this procedure has been working OK so far and is a lot
cheaper than him dialing in directly to California.  Obviously, he
is a trusted user and I don't stay connected very long.   Not sure
though, how you would establish a PPP connection on a machine which
is unattended and needs to get connected on demand and disconnected
when you are finished.  Like everything else though, I suspect there
is a way and smarter people than I will know how to do it.

BTW, I do this on RH 5.1
