I am not saying that is all that evil, as they can't really do
anything till you do something illegal. But this is standard operating
procedure in some of the places I have worked in; places I don't consider
"paranoid", just prudent. (One defense contractor put me through a fairly
low level industrial security course, which confirmed some of the things I
was already "suspicious" about. Believe me, there is a lot more industrial
espionage going on than you think; you just have to know what to look
for.) The better companies will check things like this before they decide
whether to hire you or not, and sometimes whether admit you to some future
events, and after vandalism, damage, etc. Of course, they deny all
this... but if there is an incident worthy of legal investigation, the
tapes often come out. Some (most?) companies out here routinely videotape
everything that goes on in and around their buildings. It is just
standard practice in this legalistic age.

Fairly lax companies would just review the tapes of the events; but
we represent an organized effort, and are part of a movement that they
have admitted they have to target. They have already tried to buy out one
of the majors of the movement. What they will decide to do, I do not
know; but if I was them, I would be trying to identify the opposition so
as to sound some of us out, (fake employment interviews are a favorite way
of gathering information, I think I've been through a few myself in the
past twenty eight years I've been in this business;) buy some of us off,
or otherwise diffuse some of us. I know this stuff is done, it was done
with my father repeatedly, and to others whom I know of by several
industries. The minute Dad's old company "retired" him, the competition
had a genuine offer on the table. In the course of that, my father saw the
extensive dossier a small-to-medium sized company had compiled on him over
the years, simply because he had some skills they wanted. That is not an
isolated incident.

As to me, I know for sure that I am Persona Non Grata because of
prior correspondence regarding patent issues. They've treated me and my
partner like the plague before. We represent a substantial potential loss
to them.
