The way the Debian lists are distributed is between individual sites.
Though the lists are propogated as newsgroups, you normally will not see
checkgroups messages for them. I also do not see any spam. Since the news
lists are not echoed BACK to the mailing lists, any spam posted there
stays there, it is not sent to the mailing list subscribers. In other
words, it is a one-way gateway though users may post directly to the
Usenet list if they want. Their posting just will not be seen by people
who read the list by mail. A mail posting reaches everyone.
I carry the Debian and Red Hat mailing lists as newsgroups as gatewayed by
fuller.edu. If anyone is interested is receiving a feed of these either by
nntp or uucp over tcp/ip, let me know.
