Quoting Matt Williams as cited by Yani Copas (yani at etoys.com):

There are, of course, places of business that require employees to
read and write the Microsoft file formats du jour on their work
machines. Most of these actually mandate the use of Microsoft OSes and
applications. I have the fortune to not work for one, considering
it a corporate non-survival trait.
However, the above seems to imply that anyone who doesn't need
Microsoft software for his job is just a [computer] hobbyist. Not
correct: It is eminently, supremely practical to be in business
without using Microsoft's mutating file formats. All you have to
do is politely decline such files, and suggest reasonable alternatives.
People who have a genuine business need to subject themselves to
PowerPoint presentations might be an exception, and I'm sure there
are other specific instances, but that does not change the general
case.

Cheers, Linux: It is now safe to turn on your computer.
