well, on the repartitioning I can tell you this: more files in the same FS
means risking more info in the case of a bad logical crash (forget
hardware crashes, that's what RAIDs are for). Also, if you backup with
dump like me, you are limited to the size of the backup tape. DDS2 means
partitions should not be bigger than ~4gig etc.
