A grey background sounds good, do you also see the mouse cue?? It seems the
server runs fine, only you haven't started any X clients. Check the .xinitrc at your ~/ dir. If it doesn't exist, create it and put
something like:
/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm
in it (or any other WM you might have on your system, also first do a "which
fvwm" to make sure this is the right path). 
You can even try a simple X client instead just to make sure it works, 
e.g. xclock/xterm etc.
