For Debian users:
If you are in sync with the frozen tree (slink) you will not need any
additional software. Grab the 2.1.125 kernel source package and install
it. It will drop a tarball into /usr/src but will not unpack it. Unpack
the tarball where you want it, copy .config.save to .config (this gives
you the default Debian kernel config) and run menuconfig. You will need to
change one item for most systems. Cursor down in the main menu to the
"Console drivers" selection. Hit enter and then select the VGA text
console item.
Now save the configuration grab the kernel-package package. After you have
installed that, type:
make-kpkg --bzimage --revision 1L kernel-image
And when it is done, you should find a .deb of your kernel and its modules
in the directory above your source tree. Install it with dpkg -i and
reboot. That is it. If you are doing anything like IP forwarding between
interfaces or IP-Masquerading or packet filtering, you will need to check
the documentation. The behavior of some of these things has changed.
Have fun!
