oh, it recognizez it alright, otherwise it wouldn't get stuck...

the answer surprised even me: IRQ conflict! on two seperate machines here
at work, with Intel boards and windshield Vipers (that's how we call
them...) the problem was simply the AGP and the 3com 905 having a fight.
shuffeling the PCI cards solved it completely. the Xserver is the same one
for the PCI V330 (I think S3 or SVGA, can't remember now)
