But it takes three days to download it. I think Debian emacs and all the
bells and whistles are somewhere between 20 and 30 megs ... compressed. It
is the first thing I delete from the debian installation. I am not worried
about editor preference since emacs-like keybindings can be found in many
other editors. The problem with emacs is that it thinks it is an OS. Who
needs all that crap?

Have you looked a nedit or textedit from the openview clients.
