[svlug] two ethernet cards

hey all,
I recently installed a second ethernet card in an old 486 to begin setting
up a firewall. I managed to get the card setup at boot time by putting a
second ifcfg-ethN file into the sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory.

this is what dmesg reports:
eth0: 3c509 at 0x300 tag 1, 10baseT port, address 00 60 8c f3 0c 52, IRQ
10.
3c509.c:1.12 6/4/97 becker at cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov
eth1: 3c509 at 0x210 tag 2, 10baseT port, address 00 a0 24 2f a4 2a, IRQ
11.
3c509.c:1.12 6/4/97 becker at cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov
eth0: Setting Rx mode to 1 addresses.
eth1: Setting Rx mode to 0 addresses.
eth1: Setting Rx mode to 1 addresses.
ARP: arp called for own IP address

I am not sure what the ARP message is about.

/sbin/ifconfig reports this:
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3584 Metric:1
          RX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:8C:F3:0C:52
          inet addr:38.168.9.13 Bcast:38.168.9.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:5408 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:43 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:2F:A4:2A
          inet addr:38.168.9.14 Bcast:38.168.9.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:3590 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          TX packets:1773 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0x210

this all looks fine and dandy until I try and ping the eth0 IP address, I
get a complete packet loss. when I ping the eth1 address it is fine, albeit
a little slow ~0.9ms.

I was wondering what I missed in setting up the second card, eth1. eth0 was
working fine until this the installation of the second card, IRQ and memory
addresses are fine. Both addresses ping fine from another box here.

Aside from the Firewall-HOWTO, can someone recommend additional books or
websites?

Thanks,
Barry
