THis excerpt from the article I mentioned in the previous post is a good
example of FUD:

Certain players in the IT industry will surely pull out all the stops to
promote Linux to prop up their own revenues and profitability, with
little regard for the potential damage they may inflict upon corporate
customers. Even analyst companies will benefit by providing reports on
technologies and strategies. The only loser in all of this will be the
user.

Nowhere in the article does the writer mention what kind of potential
damage Linux can inflict on corporate customers or how it hurts the user.
What he HAS done is put the IT engineer on the defensive if he proposes a
Linux solution to the non-technical manager who just read this article.

Imagine this scenario. Main nameserver dies. New parts will not arrive
until tomarrow. IT geek says he can get a Linux box up with bind in 15
minutes and move the zone files over from the backup server, all should be
up in a few minutes.  Manager shoots the idea down because he is not
going have "damage" inflicted on his network. The article makes people who
offer a Linux solution look like loose cannon who are shooting from the
hip and can cause real problems in the network. The manager does not know
what KIND of damage, just there is a POTENTIAL for damage and he is not
willing to take the risk. 

It is called Psycological Operations in the Army. It is called FUD in the
civillian world.

The next question the manager tries to get answered is what kind of damage
Linux can cause. He finds nothing. He also finds nothing that says Linux
WILL NOT damage the network so he can not afford to take a chance because
he does not understand the technology.
