Hi another linux beginner here. Never heard about pstree but of course I
have it and it is simple compared to Stig's:

init-+-5*[agetty]
     |-ax25d
     |-bash---startx---xinit-+-.xinitrc---fvwm
     | `-X
     |-color_xterm---bash---bash
     |-color_xterm---bash---bash---bash---pine
     |-color_xterm---bash---pstree
     |-crond
     |-gpm
     |-inetd
     |-kerneld
     |-kflushd
     |-2*[kissattach]
     |-klogd
     |-kswapd
     |-lpd
     |-mheardd
     |-mouseclock
     |-netromd
     |-4*[nfsiod]
     |-ping
     |-pppd-2.2
     |-sendmail
     |-syslogd
     |-update
     `-xterm---bash---begin-+-procmeter
                            `-xfbb.sh---xfbb

But this is a very nice display. One morning I saw procmeter
maxing out for no good reason so I used ps and found a cron started
program was trying to list every file on the new cd-rom! I decided to just
comment out that feature...:-)

Best wishes
