I agree that the move to glibc wasn't painless, but if it wasn't for RH and
Debian, we would still be in the process of starting to port programs.
Sorry to say that, but while Caldera and Suse can boast being more stable,
the glibc switch didn't happen thanks to them.

Are you talking about system V init style /etc/rc.d/init.d, along with links
in /etc/rc.d/rc.[0-6]d ?
That's one of the (very few) nice things from system V, and it's been in
Redhat since the first versions.

Actually, I  do have a  rc.serial file on  my system. You'll notice  that by
default rc.sysinit also runs a /etc/rc.d/rc.modules if there is one.

As  for  the rest  of  your  comment, many  of  the  newer linux  users  are
in-capable of writing, let's say a rc.network file with all the ifconfig and
route commands.

Those who are capable  to do that are free to modify  the default rc scripts
to meet their needs (my rc.sysinit is _very_ different from RH's).
