hi ya guys/gals...
first off...nice talk David....very entertaining and informative...
-------
and now my puzzle..
just am wondering.... donno how many of you cut and paste
passwd entries for users into /etc/passwd file on various
linux machine
grep user /Net/*/etc/passwd
( same user...same passwd on all linux machines )
/Net/mach1/etc/passwd:user:aIoYV1U4O8ia2:... rh5.1
/Net/mach2/etc/passwd:user:aIoYV1U4O8ia2:... rh5.0 <<--
/Net/mach3/etc/passwd:user:kM9lU5uJWMaD.:... rh4.2
/Net/mach4/etc/passwd:user:aIoYV1U4O8ia2:... rh5.0
/Net/mach5/etc/passwd:user:zEKp649bnM/vw:... rh5.0 <<--
/Net/mach6/etc/passwd:user:aIoYV1U4O8ia2:... rh5.1
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
never noticed it different etc...since it all worked...
- always cut-n-pasted from rh4.2 master machine to the distribution machine
and manually, or rdist/rcp, etc to the workstations
( since it works...have not attepted to cut and paste
( the passwd string to the other machine yet
and no...don't even think of yp/nis...yuk.... thou the above is just as yukky..
----------------
and another hummm.....time for another pair of eyes or brains...
AnyLinuxMachine~# rsh AnyOtherMachine -l user date
** works from any machine to all other machines/version **
AnyLinuxMachine~# rsh AnyOtherMachine -l root date
fails only on redhat 4.2 machines as root...and works on rh-5.0, rh-5.1
I checked ~user/.rhosts and ~root/.rhosts, /etc/host.equiv, /etc/securetty
( I don't use /etc/hosts.equiv )
AnyLinuxMachine:~# ls -la /Net/*/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:13 /Net/mach1/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:13 /Net/mach2/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:17 /Net/mach3/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:13 /Net/mach4/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:17 /Net/mach5/root/.rhosts
-r-------- 1 root root 586 Aug 4 23:17 /Net/mach6/root/.rhosts
thanx
