As Alvin says, your X configuration is screwed up.  You need to fix it.
Throw away (or archive) your existing X configuration file (it's a mess),
make sure you understand _well_ all relevant facts about your video
card and monitor[1], then run the configurator to do it again from scratch.

I hope you don't think this is responsive to my recommendation, for it

I hope you don't think this is responsive to my recommendation, for it 
is not.  It's important to understand bash even if _you_ don't ever "use
it", for many reasons, including the fact that practically all scripts 
you run that are written by others _do_ use it.

Works for me.  The running around is invigorating, and then you get to 
relax while toasting... well... lots of things over an open fire.
