I just read (in several places - check with Google) that Ubuntu will drop support for pre-i686 CPUs for the Maverick Meerkat 10.10 release.

Currently their i686 kernel does support the VIA C3 cpu I have in a couple of systems, which is actually 2 instructions short of an i686-class CPU.

Fedora stopped supported i586-class CPUs *including* the VIA C3 after F11.

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a Linux/BSD/UNIX server for backups.
