For those who have missed being able to set up their login screen in Karmic and Lucid releases of Ubuntu, here is a new program for doing that: GDM2 Setup

It's not (yet) in the regular repositories, so you have to add one as described on that web site.

I ran into a problem where the default login background, which has been in the directory /usr/share/images/xsplash/ as bg_2560x1600.jpg, appeared to be in /usr/share/backgrounds/ as warty-final-ubuntu.png - very strange! So I copied my desired background to that file and it worked. Then I did a brief Google[tm] search and found out about the gdm2setup program.

Apparently, when you select an image, it makes copies in several resolutions in /usr/share/images/xsplash/ and activates the chosen image in the right resolution, for the next login. You can just logout from Gnome to see the change.

The program is apparently under development - perhaps it can eventually regain most of the functionality of the pre-Karmic (earlier version of Gnome) program for setting up the login screen.

On another topic, what do people think of the move of the minimize/fullscreen/exit buttons from the right to the left side of Gnome windows, which just appeared in the Lucid betas? I personally don't like it, as I tend to keep my mouse pointer towards the right side of a window, to keep it out of the way and to use it for scrolling. BTW in Lucid, you now right-click on the title bar to be able to move a window into a different desktop, etc. - the button that used to be on the left for doing that is gone now.
