[Smaug] Karmic background issue..

It sounds like a bug to me. I keep running into screen bugs myself.
Modern screen drivers can be sooo complex and there are a number of
video boards that have to be reverse-engineered if the manufacturer
doesn't cooperate with open-source developers.

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a UNIX or Linux or BSD server for backups.
