A point that's often misunderstood:  Kubuntu and Ubuntu are the same thing. 

The "Ubuntu" installation CD install the OS base set plus desktop
metapackage "ubuntu-desktop" (comprising a bunch of individual GNOME packages).

The "Kubuntu installation CD installs that _same OS base set_ plus desktop
metapackage "kubuntu-desktop" (comprising a bunch of individual KDE packages).


Therefore, what you probably want to do after completing installation of
the Ubuntu v. 5.10 "breezy badger" packages is:

$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Then, you'll have both desktop metapackages.


Also useful to know about for (in particular) laptop users:  Kanotix, MEPIS.
