Sounds reasonable. For whatever it's worth, I'm able to resolve the
hostname (but still can't do "cvs update"):

[rick@uncle-enzo]
/var/www/smaug/htdocs $ ping cvs.smaug-web.sourceforge.net
PING usw-pr-cvs.sourceforge.net (216.136.171.202): 56 data bytes

64 bytes from 216.136.171.202: icmp_seq=1 ttl=240 time=33.5 ms

--- usw-pr-cvs.sourceforge.net ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 33.5/49.7/65.9 ms
[rick@uncle-enzo]
/var/www/smaug/htdocs $ cvs update
usw-pr-cvs.sourceforge.net: Connection refused
cvs [update aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)

And, by the way, in case anyone was wondering (as one fellow did,
off-list):

[rick@uncle-enzo]
/var/www/smaug/htdocs $ echo $CVS_RSH
ssh
