I will definitely try to show up for this. I'm going to attempt
installation on the Compaq Deskpro this week. I still have issues with
getting X running on the laptop LCD, but the installation itself is stable
and I'm using the machine through the network.

Subject: [SMAUG] Getting Linux onto that Winbook
Reviewing the prior posts, I might close with the suggestion that Calvin
come over the hill next Saturday, August 18, to attend the SVLUG
InstallFest. (See: http://www.svlug.org/ ) to get assistance with
his Winbook -- or with that Compaq he also mentioned.
The Winbook might benefit from having someone check thoroughly through
the BIOS settings: What Calvin described sounded suspiciously like an
IRQ problem. It's conceivable, e.g., that he has the BIOS configured to
assume a "Plug and Play OS", which might create problems, or something
else might stand out, upon examination.
Additionally, I and others bring a wide choice of Linux and BSD
distributions to the InstallFest, which can be useful for Calvin and
others. Here, for example, is the list of CDs in my InstallFest kit:
Apple Darwin for x86 v. 1.31
Connectiva Linux 7.0
Corel Linux 1.2
Debian x86 Official 2.2r3
FreeBSD 4.3, 5.0snapshot
Knoppix 2.0
Libranet 1.8.2
Linux-Mandrake 8.0
LinuxPPC "2000MacWorld" (Feb. 2000)
NetBSD (many platforms) 1.5.1
OpenBSD 2.9
Progeny 1.0
Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.1.93beta ("Roswell")
Slackware x86 8.0
Stampede Linux 0.90
Star Office (Linux/English) 5.2 w/ Corel Word Perfect 8, Open Office
build 633 (pre-6.0), & Microsoft NetShow 2.00beta build 2.51 for Linux
Star Office 5.2 all platforms/languages
Storm Linux 2.0.6
SuSE x86 "evaluation" 7.0
Turbo Linux x86 Server 6.0.5
Turbo Linux x86 Workstation 6.1
Yellow Dog Linux 2.0
If you bring machines to an InstallFest, be sure to include your
monitor, keyboard, pointing device, and all cables including AC power
cables and a power strip -- unless you're _sure_ someone else has
guaranteed to have shlepped one there you may borrow.

Cheers, Errors have been made. Others will be blamed.
