Rick,
Sorry about the lack of detail in prior posts, here is a bit more detail.
I tried multiple combinations of BIOS settings, including completely
disabling any sort of power down whatsoever, with no luck. The model of
Winbook is the Winbook XL 400Mhz AMD with 128MB ram, and 3 gigabyte hard
drive, floppy, cd rom, 800x600 display, and I believe a Chips and
Technologies 65554. I have seen the following page:
http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/ratinox/wbxl.html for a successful linux
installation on a related older model of Winbook. The page did indicate
that there are issues with the power management that go away when disabled
at the BIOS level, which I did.
I tried initially, a partition with 32MB swap and two equal size partitions
(linux and linux extended). I ran into problems with this during text
install because of the size of the caldera full installation. I
repartitioned into 1 linux partition and a 300MB swap and the allowed
everything to install. I have a suspicion that the power management daemon
was causing the lockups, but I couldn't find it in the process list. The
console screen seems to default to 640x480.
When starting X11, it gives a grey background with the "X" pointer in the
center, and it stops responding to any input whatsoever. What I mean by
freeze immediately is no response to keys, the pointer does not move,
nothing.
I ruled out hardware problems by test loading Windows and burning it in
overnight, no issues.
I tried booting into the Caldera CD again, trying various modes, all modes
lock up except for text install mode.
This week I will try installing on my Compaq Deskpro (Pentium II 350, 96MB
Ram, 6GB hard disk, network card). Last time I tried, it was experiencing
similar installation symptoms with the Caldera CD.
How I verified the kernel was not seeing the PCMCIA 3C589D is when Caldera
boots up, it indicates that no PCMCIA devices found, and no network card
installed. I do know the 3C589D is in David Hine's list, but I haven't had
the system running long enough to investigate adding in the support, easy or
not.
Where can I find information on the SVLUG installfest?
Calvin
If you're still having problems by a week from this Saturday, come on
over the hill to the SVLUG InstalLFest. We can help you install just
about anything. (Be sure to bring printouts of any relevant pages you
find via the Linux on Laptops page.)
